Around the holiday, I bought 3 coffee tubbies and 3 just collagen tubbies. I gave one to my sister as a gift, leaving myself with 5 months worth. Starting mid or late January, I had my collagen every morning and it kept me full for a long time before needing to eat something for lunch. That was a nice bonus because I think it staved off a lot of weight gain from working at home, sitting in my desk chair for ~ 10 hours per day, so that was benefit #1. I mainly bought this for the cosmetic benefits: I wanted the thicker hair, plumper/clearer skin and nail growth. Full disclosure: my hair is naturally fine, skin naturally oily and nails hardly grow at all.
Over the next 5 months, my nails grew a bit and that was nice -- nothing crazy, but it was nice. I thought my skin looked good and my lips looked a little fuller, but I thought maybe that was from being inside and avoiding the sun, and hydrating better maybe? Less of my hair seemed to come out when I brushed. But maybe that was my imagination...?
The thing is some of these positive benefits come in slowly and incrementally, so it can be hard to gauge unless you've taken measurements or before and after pictures for yourself. I think it's good to be clinical and try to observe via scientific method. But if I'm being honest, I was too lazy, and also too excited to try my crushed tonic to actually do that.
It turns out though, I actually did the experiment in reverse...So fast forward to today. I mentioned I had 5 months of collagen and started in mid-January. Well, I ran out in mid-June and didn't re-order right away. It's mid July right now and I've been without my Crushed Tonic for a month.
Here's what happened:
I didn't mention above that I started working out again a couple months ago, while I was still having Crushed Tonic every morning. It was great and I didn't think anything of it, even when I was jumping around or lunging or lifting heavy weights. But I should have thought something. Here's why: several years ago, I ruptured a disc and couldn't sit or stand without excruciating pain for 3 months. Miraculously, that healed, but I was left with no real cushioning between a couple of vertebrae. Working out and jumping were not always great for me, but as I said, after a few months of collagen, I worked out and jumped and lifted heavy weights with no issue. (Not giving medical advice -- back pain is real and terrible, so check with your Dr and don't listen to me). I apparently notice when things are WRONG, but am not always aware when they're going RIGHT. But after a few months of Crushed atonic, I was working out like a champ and completely forgot that I ever had a dodgy back or creaky knees.
So here we are today -- I ran out and haven't had Crushed Tonic for a month. I actually stopped working out again bc without the collagen supplement, my knees kept making crunching noises when I worked out. And I sat funny and tweaked my back. That was part of the experiment in reverse, apparently. But it's a huge deal. I didn't even realize some of the benefits I was getting until after I STOPPED having my Crushed Tonic for a few weeks...
I also notice -- again, after about a month WITHOUT collagen supplement -- that my lips look less full (a little shrivel-y, actually. I don't love it), my nails started breaking, there's more hair in the brush AND (this bugs me) my forehead looks more wrinkly when I raise my eyebrows. Also -- I recently got an acne scar from a small blemish that would not have scarred before. It's such a funny thing that I didn't notice these benefits as acutely when they were (incrementally) starting to appear. But I SURE DID notice them when I stopped for a month, cold turkey, and they started fading away.
The plus side is that I have FULL CLARITY now on what the marine collagen was doing for me. The downside is that I just placed a new order and I'm still waiting for it to come. I'm writing this from a hot bath bc my knees and back are really mad at me for stopping, and want their cushioning back.
I can't wait for my order to arrive so I can start up again and straighten all this out! It's kind of amazing and refreshing to have a product that actually DOES something 💖
