Why Collagen Can Help You Sleep

No need to keep saying collagen can benefit our skin, hair and joints. But you might not know collagen also is good for our sleep.

You may not notice the fact that most supplements for sleep issues have one ingredient which is glycine. 

But what is glycine? Glycine (AKA 2-Aminoacetic Acid) is an amino acid and a neurotransmitter. Our body produces glycine on its own, synthesized from other natural biochemicals, most often serine, but also choline and threonine. We also consume glycine through food. This amino acid is found in high-protein foods including meat, fish, eggs, dairy and legumes. Which you might notice all these foods also can help our body to produce collagen. 

Glycine is a neurotransmitter with the ability to be both excitatory and inhibitory, meaning it can function both to stimulate brain and nervous system activity, or to quiet it. People use glycine as an oral supplement for a range of purposes, including improving sleep, enhancing memory, and increasing insulin sensitivity. Glycine is also available in topical form, and used to heal wounds and treat skin ulcers.

However, because collagen contains the amino acid glycine, collagen can help reduce insomnia. Doctors tested the effects of taking a supplement containing 3 grams of glycine on insomnia patients. The supplement reportedly reduced their fatigue and sleepiness during the next day.
